The active ingredients in Magnolia bark is magnolol and honokiol, which are substances that are believed to reduce stress and related symptoms. It is also thought to lower the stress hormone, cortisol. It also contains eudesmol, an essential oil that is thought to have antioxidant power. Used historically as a substitute for quinine, in the treatment of malaria, it is shown to have the ability to raise perspiration levels, therefore, it may be beneficial for reducing fevers.

The chemicals found in Magnolia bark are said to be effective in combating stress and anxiety. And, it is believed to do this with five times more potency than Valium®, and without the lethargy or addiction that can occur with anti-anxiety medication. The stress related hormone, cortisol, increases blood glucose levels and suppresses the ‘fight or flight’ hormone necessary for human instincts, but that can be bad for us in high levels, or for prolonged periods of time.  Magnolia bark is best used for short-term anxiety and acute feelings of anxiety.

In a 2010 article published in “The Journal of Ethnopharmacology” Dr Uwe Koetter and his colleagues found that Magnolia bark extract stimulated dopamine, serotonin and benzodiazapene receptors. It mimics the natural chemicals in the body and supports mood balance and relaxation, necessary for a good night’s rest. The study supports the traditional use of Magnolia bark tinctures for treating insomnia and anxiety. This can be especially important to those who stay up all night obsessing over an issue, or issues Magnolia can help to eliminate obsessive focus, and allows you to calm down and sleep better.

Magnolia bark may also have antidepressant properties, as well, and regulate the brain chemicals associated with depression. Magnolia also helps to reduce stress eating. A couple of studies have shown that women who consumed Magnolia bark extract ate fewer calories Although it is not an appetite suppressant, it may help to tame the the compulsion to eat while under stress.

Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the liver and lead to ALD (alcohol liver disease), which involves the accumulation of fat around the liver. The herb was found in animal studies to be effective for the condition, as the rats that were given Magnolia bark along with the alcohol diet, showed a significant reversal of the previously induced fatty liver changes. The bark has also been chewed by people trying to ‘break the tobacco habit’.

While honokiol can be effective for controlling stress and anxiety, magnolol, is said to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent. Therefore, Magnolia bark extract may help to reduce pain and discomfort in inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatism, arthritis and gout. Both of these chemicals are suggested to be beneficial for the health of the vital organs, like the heart and the brain. If dosed properly, Magnolia bark could be useful for reducing high blood pressure levels The magnocurarine substance in the plant is known to have sedative effects over elevated heart rate. Use under the advice of your health provider.

Magnolia bark is used by herbalists to treat various digestive problems like abdominal pain and cramping, bloating, indigestion, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence and gastroenteritis. The antispasmodic effects are also found to be useful for menstrual cramps.

Magnolia Bark is thought to have antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. The bark is believed to relieve and help to combat upper respiratory tract infections and spasms, including asthma, coughs, profuse phlegm in the lungs, shortness of breath and fullness and pressure in the chest area.

More recently, dentists have become interested in Magnolia bark tincture. It has antibacterial effects that may help to limit plaque build up through its interference with bacteria that can cause cavities, periodontal disease and halitosis, or what is referred to as bad breath. The properties work amazingly against tooth decay, and has been shown to destroy oral bacteria in only 30 minutes.
